Interdisciplinary Research into the Legacy of the Medieval Metropolis of Soba in a Modern Khartoum Suburb

Abstract Recent research at Soba focuses on the tangible and intangible heritage of medieval capital Alwa kingdom, whose remains cover approximately 275 ha. About 222 ha this area has been built up or transformed into agricultural land in past 30 years. An ethnographic survey was also carried out built-up to understand how residents engage with archaeological material remains. The undeveloped (53 ha) focus interdisciplinary fieldwork conducted 2019 2020. A large-scale geophysical survey, using a fluxgate gradiometer ground-penetrating radar, initiated area, excavation trenches were opened verify distinctive magnetic anomalies.
